After deliberations in nominating committees, comprised of members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) that make up the Critics’ Choice organization, the nominations were announced Monday for the trophies that will be handed out November 3, 2016 at BRIC, in Brooklyn, New York.
Leading the nominations with five each are Ava Duvernay’s 13th, Ezra Edelman’s O.J.: Made in America and Clay Tweet’s Gleason. All had theatrical releases and are also available on Netflix, ESPN and Amazon, respectively, affording them wide audiences.
“It is an amazing time for documentaries, with the ever-increasing number of platforms enabling producers to reach enthusiastic and growing audiences for non-fiction storytelling,” said BFCA and BTJA President Joey Berlin.
There are 10 nominees in the top film category, best documentary feature (film): 13th, O.J. and Gleason, as well as Cameraperson; Fire at Sea; Life, Animated; Tickled; Tower; Weiner and The Witness.
13th also is among the 10 nominees in the 10 TV/streaming category, best documentary feature (TV/streaming), along with O.J.; Fantastic Lies; Amanda Knox; Audrie & Daisy; Before the Flood; Holy Hell; Into the Inferno; Jim: The James Foley Story; Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures and Rats.
