‘People v O.J.,’ ‘La La Land’ and ‘Manchester’ Dominate Critics’ Choice Awards

la-la-ccIt was a night almost as joyous as the opening freeway song and dance number in “La La Land.” The musical, directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, picked up eight trophies including best picture at the 22nd Annual Critics ‘Choice Awards, making it the front-runner as awards season rolls on.

“Moonlight” also picked up more acclaim, including a win for best acting ensemble. “Manchester by the Sea” also proved itself to be a major contender with trophies for costars Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges and a tie with “La La Land” for best original screenplay

The three-hour program, hosted by comedian T.J. Miller, honored the best in film and television over the past year and was broadcast live on A&E from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica Sunday night.

FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” was the definitive vote-getter on the TV side, picking up best movie made for television/limited series along with acting awards for Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown.

OJ's Travolta nd PaulsonIt was also a big night for Ryan Reynolds, who was named entertainer of the year and won best actor in a comedy for “Deadpool,” which also took the trophy for best comedy.

Viola Davis also made two trips to the podium, receiving the first ever #SeeHer Award– bestowed as part of a campaign to improve images of women and girls in the media–and also best supporting actress in a movie for the Denzel Washington-directed “Fences.”
