WGA Awards 2018Many organizations give out awards for writing, but members of the Writers Guild of America are inarguably the true experts when it comes to judging the quality of a screenplay.

The WGA released its list of nominees for its top film honors today, many of which will likely land on the ballot for the Academy Awards as well.

For many of the contenders, like Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon it’s their first time being nominated. Others like James Ivory, Alex Gibney and Aaron Sorkin are practically regulars on the awards circuit.

Eligibility for WGA Awards require that the films be made under Guild jurisdiction.

Many notable contenders did not make the cut, including Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phanton Thread” and Liz Hannah and Josh Singer’s “The Post” in the original category and David Scarpa’s “All the Money in the World” and Jack Thorne, Steve Conrad and Stephen Chbosky’s “Wonder” in the adapted category.

Winners of its 70th annual WGA Awards will be revealed on Feb. 11 in simultaneous ceremonies at the Edison Ballroom in New York City and the Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills. “Late Night With Seth Meyers” writer Amber Ruffin will host the New York show while Patton Oswalt will host the West Coast ceremonies.
