Leather and Lycra: The Fabric of Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion

There was a fashionable look for almost everyone at the Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion presented by Moroccanoil runway show held at the historic Vibiana cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, just steps from the city’s fashion district.

Hosted by fashion plate Zoe Saldana, who is a cofounder of a new fashion database, myFDB.com, the sold out event showcased seven up-and-coming designers with their Spring 2012 collections.

Featured were designs from the lines of Chambers, Dear Creatures, Funktional, 71 STANTON, We Are Handsome, ODYLYNE and Stand and Deliver.

Closing out STYLE Fashion Week LA, after a series of shows at Vibiana during the previous week, it  was the 13th edition of Fresh Faces in Fashion– the place where revered designers like Phillip Lim and Louis Verdad got their starts– and therefore a coveted venue for clothing creators to strut their stuff.

After the inevitable seat-shuffling, the party got started with creative swimsuits from We Are Handsome, and they sure were pretty. One bikini bottom was adorned with either a cat or an owl on the rear, which would make for quite the splash poolside.

Dear Creatures showed off flirty dresses in muted colors like gray, cream and navy while Odylyne went for a ruffled, modern-day hippie look with its colorful frocks and Funktional showcased short jewel-toned dresses with cropped printed vests. Stanton’s tagline was “Off the bench and onto the street of LA” with a prime example, a grey knit jersey dress with seafoam chiffon inset panels. Chambers paraded its male models dressed in looks reminiscent of early 90s Seattle grunge, with plaid woven shirts tied around the waist over rolled up denims.

But it was Stand and Deliver that stole the show with its edgy leather designs and outre presentation, complete with a couple who got out of the audience and began groping each other onstage, dressed in fetish-y leathers, of course, a duo of skateboarders who raced down the runway and then began wrestling and in a somewhat futuristic/spooky set-up, a man dressed in white doctor’s garb wheeling an all-white head to toe clothed person, indeterminate sex, down the runway on a trolley.

Almost as important as the clothing, and under as much of the spotlight: the accessories and the hair, which is why the event was sponsored by Moroccanoil, the leading argan oil-infused line of professional hair products, used by top runway stylists all over the world.

Los Angeles-based Moroccanoil hair stylist Kevin Hughes headed the team that collaborated with designers and created the hair looks for the runway show.

His hairstyles were as diverse as the clothing with the featured hair looks on the models showcasing various textures ranging from curly and wavy to smooth, sleek and silky, including deep side swept bangs, loose braided effects and creative ponytails.

“Well-conditioned, healthy hair played a key role in the styling process and the success of the different looks shown,” said Hughes, who used a selection of Moroccanoil products including its signature treatment oil that immediately absorbs into strands to condition, strengthen and improve the elasticity of the hair.

“This allowed high speed styling changes that included back-combing and use of hot blow dryers and flat irons,” said Hughes.  “After LA Fashion Week and the stresses so many models had on their hair, we needed it to help restore their hair and prevent additional damage.”

Too bad he couldn’t whip up a concoction for indulging in too many of the Ketel One cocktails being served in the Vibiana courtyard for the afterparty.

Diving in to a Stylish Holiday Collection

Aimee Teegarden, Maurice Marciano and Cio Soler at Mr. C

There could not have been a more perfect night for Guess by Marciano to present its 2011 holiday collection in conjunction with fashion bible Vogue.

It was unseasonably warm as guests navigated their way from the mobbed valet parking and crowded into the pool area at the new Mr. C Beverly Hills, which is technically in Los Angeles, on the site of a formerly dumpy hotel at the corner of Pico and Beverwil, now gone upscale.

Flowing Perrier-Jouët and specialty cocktails? Check. Hot models? You betcha. A synchronized swimming troupe in sexy black one-piece suits, the Aqualillies? Over-the-top fun.

Aimee Teegarden, Carmen Electra, Shay Mitchell and Christian Serratos were among the guests looking stylish in Guess by Marciano as attention turned toward the pool and the show by the Aqualillies, alternating with sets of models sashaying from the poolside runway on stage to show off pieces from the new collection.

It is retro-inspired and ranges from high-glamour evening wear and versatile separates juxtaposed with effortlessly chic classic denim pieces.  Sequin and lace accents complemented the rich indigo blue, red,   black and winter white tones of the gowns and mid-length pencil dresses.

On-trend women will love the romantic sheer ruffled blouses and suit separates in earth tones that go day-into- evening when paired with cigarette-cut jeans and patent leather pumps.  Faux fur and sequin embellishments, animal prints and bold, asymmetrical cuts were other trends that dominated the poolside runway at the event.

Everything looked great, even if it got a little wet.

Hot Haute Couture: Just Like the Creations, This Show is Limited Edition

Bravo!, we say to this stunning new American debut of Il Teatro alla Moda, which translates to “Theater in Fashion.” It’s the first such exhibition of an amazing collection of costumes from opera, dance and theater designed by Italy’s top haute couture designers.

About 80 costumes – along with sketches and drawings – are on display at a temporary gallery location in Beverly Hills, presented by the Wallis Annenberg Centerfor the Performing Arts in a limited run that goes through November 13, 2011.

The creations of vaunted designers–including the late Gianni Versace, who made some of the most magnificent pieces–are on life-size mannequins spread throughout the ground floor of the new MGM Place at 253 N. Beverly Dr.

Some of the other designers represented are Giorgio Armani, Roberto Capucci, Romeo Gigli, Alberta Ferrettii, Emanuel Ungaro, Valentino, Fendi and Missoni, who contributed their creations to productions including “Carmen,” “Salome,” “The Magic Flute” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Upon viewing them, you will a) wish you were on Madison Avenue to browse through their current collections and/or b) kick yourself for not getting on board the Missoni Target bandwagon and grabbing a piece of the line’s low-priced collection.

But mainly, you’ll just be thrilled to be at this beautiful showcase, brought to the states after Annenberg executive director Lou Moore saw the exhibit in Italy and wanted to bring it to American audiences.

“The designers’ passion for the arts resonated with me on a personal level. For many of them, the arts are their first love. It’s that passion for theater, dance and pera that we plan to bring to the Annenberg when we open,” said Moore, referring to the Italian Renaissance Beverly Hills Post Office that is currently being transformed into a performing arts venue scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.

Il Teatro alla Moda premiered with a glitzy opening and afterparty down the street at the Beverly Canon Gardens, with the outdoor reception catered by Scott Conant’s restaurant, Scarpetta, located in the adjacent Montage Hotel.

To accompany the Italian-inspired cuisine, Nic’s Beverly Hills rose to the occasion by creating two specialty drinks including the “Mandarino Italiano” and “La Dolce Vita,” and guests could also enjoy vino from Chalone and Beaulieu Vineyards or naturally, San Pellegrino.

The curator of the exhibit, Massimiliano Capella of Brescia’s Musei Mazzuccheli and Valeria Mangani, the fashion representative for the Rome Mayor’s office flew to Southern California for the occasion.

“The relationship between theater and fashion has allowed the designers to leave their own unique mark on theatrical events,” said Capella. “These designers brought their signature styles and their love of the arts to the stage to capture the essence of the characters in the productions. The distinctive look of each house is apparent in these works for the stage.”

The show has previously been exhibited inRome, Brescia and will be traveling to the Villa Marin outside Venice beginning in July 2012.

Don’t miss your chance to see it here. The exhibit is open Wednesdays through Sundays and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 per person. Admission is free for all on Wednesdays. A limited edition catalog with photographs of the costumes is also available on site.

Il Teatro alla Moda, 253 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills, Wednesday through Friday, noon until 7 PM, Saturday and Sunday, 11 AM through 6 PM

The Crown Jewels of Hollywood: Elizabeth Taylor’s Collection

Diamonds. Sapphires. Rubies. Emeralds. Pearls. Designer clothing. Rare artwork. Dame Elizabeth Taylor had them all during her lifetime, and now her estate is auctioning off her staggering array of worldly possessions after a traveling roadshow of the glitziest pieces in the collection.

There was no more fitting place than Los Angeles – where Taylor lived for most of her adult life – to start off the U.S. leg of the tour, which also includes stops in London, Moscow, Geneva, Paris and Hong Kong before the complete collection is offered for sale at Christie’s New York from December 13-16.

The four-day viewing at the MOCA location at the Pacific Design Center sold out quickly at $20 a pop, so an extension was just added. Tickets for the additional viewing times will set you back $50 each and will go on sale Tuesday morning, October 11 at www.christies.com/elizabethtaylor — and nowhere else. You will not be able to get them at the door during the run, which begins Thursday, October 13 at noon and runs through Sunday, October 16. The additional hours take the show until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

No word on whether that hefty admission fee includes wine and cheese–but it should. Because although the items are each magnificent in their own right, there are only roughly about 70 things on display. Much of it is suites (earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets) of magnificent jewelry displayed in cases, from the world’s top jewelers, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bvlgari and Tiffany and given to her by husbands Mike Todd and Richard Burton, whose taste in gems was legendary.

Some of the standouts: a 32-carat diamond ring given to her by Burton, with an estimated sale price of $2.5-3.5 million, a Bvlgari sapphire and diamond necklace, estimated to go for between $600,00-$800,000, the Mike Todd antique diamond tiara he gave her that she wore to the Academy Awards when he won for “Around the World in 80 Days,” the Taj Mahal diamond pendant necklace, valued at between $300,000-$500,000, a custom-made multicolored sequined Versace jacket with an image of England’s Queen Elizabeth on the back, and her bound copy of the script for the film that brought her stardom as a young girl, “National Velvet.”

In keeping withTaylor’s devotion to humanitarian causes, a portion of the profits generated by admissions and catalog sales will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS foundation, founded in 1991 to assist those living with HIV and AIDS.

Fashion’s Night Out Blows Up: Too Much to Shop in So Little Time

It’s amazing how much Fashion’s Night Out has exploded in just the two short years of its existence. Begun in New York, as a collaboration between Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the City of New York, FNO was created to boost the fashion industry during the recession and restore consumer confidence. Now, it’s spread to more than 100 cities across the country–and tonight’s the big night.

InLos Angeles, the in-store events, fashion shows and performances are going on in a wide geographic swath from retailers inMalibu to all across the basin. As it has in year’s past, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills will be an epicenter, with the street closed to vehicular traffic and luxury brands up and down the boulevard beckoning for your business with flutes of champagne and appetizers. Neiman Marcus is also throwing a big party.

But this year, it looks like West Hollywood is the place to be, with a lengthy list of events at its retailers. So fashionistas, it’s time to get out your best logistics to make the most of FNO. Here’s the list of events in WeHo, with more info at www.FNOWestHollywood.com and www.fashionsnightout.com

Limited Edition, Low-Priced Lagerfeld at Macy’s: Ladies, Start Your Engines

The Lagerfeld Zombie black dress sells for $99

By now, you know the drill about designers’ collaborations with various stores on their limited edition, low-priced lines. If you want some of the merch, you have to act fast–and that especially goes for Macy’s Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse line that just hit stores.

The Karl Lagerfeld 45-piece exclusive capsule collection includes signature dresses, shorts, vests, faux-leather jackets and slouchy tees, mostly in shades of black, white and gray with touches of blush and florals. Prices range from $50 to $170, but most are under $100.

Some of the standouts we saw were faux leather black pants, a high-necked pale pink sheath dress, a sleek long-sleeve black dress and a faux leather vest with a hood.

There are also graphic black and white tees with Lagerfeld’s image that are very cool.

Being well-dressed at a great price, now that’s fashion forward.

Billabong Design for Humanity Rocks NY Street to Save the Music

Billabong sure knows how to throw a party, and for a good cause. The surf line put on its fifth annual Design for Humanity fashion, art and music block party celebration to benefit VH1′s Save the Music Foundation on the New York Street back lot of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood– and they’re probably still cleaning up the place from all the festivities.

The fashion, music and art-filled block party raised more than $100,000 for Save the Music. It featured two concert stages, a silent art auction, food trucks, bars, costumed photo ops with a Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp look-alike and with Skull Candy headphones and accessories.

But the main attraction was a hotter than hot fashion show featuring one-of-a-kind Billabong bathing suits that took the chill out of the air from June gloom.

The looks parading down the runway on beach-perfect bodies were reminiscent of old school rock ‘n roll artists like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger and their muses, including Pamela Courson and Uschi Obermaier. All 50 of the designs were custom-made for the show and used elements including vintage fabrics, deconstructed leather and crocheted tablecloths to make a statement.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros were the headlining performance on the main stage, evoking a Deadhead aura with their trippy stage lighting and mesmerizing beats.

Among those making the scene and showing their support: Holly’s World’s Holly Madison, Extreme Home Makover’s Ty Pennington, Nikita’s Tiffany Hines, Sean Stewart, Three6Mafia, Men of a Certain Age’s Brittany Curran and Secret Life of the American Teenager’s Grant Ward—along with countless guests dressed for summer trying not to shiver in their surfwear.

A Fashionable Way to Honor Those Who Fight For Their Country

The atmosphere was electric inside the tent at the Century Plaza Hotel, as some of Los Angeles’s top fashion designers showed off their latest creations on the runway to honor Israel’s Defense Forces on the occasion of the country’s 63rd birthday.

Dina Bar-El, Johnny Was, Gypsy 05, Rogue Apparel Branding, Next Level, Pure, Sledge, Tal Sheyn, Real Sovage, Treasure Rock and Lloyd Klein were among the designers showcasing their work to the appreciative crowd, after a cocktail hour featuring signature Israeli cuisine and a silent auction of one-of-a-kind gowns inspired by the design of the Israeli flag, created to benefit the men and women serving in the IDF.

A group of soldiers was flown in for the occasion, which was put on by the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces, (FIDF) and featured rousing anthems performed by Tamara Gabriel and Carmel.

Another crowd-pleasing performance came from rapper Won-G, who grew up in Haiti and spoke about how Israel’s army was first on the scene last year when the devastating earthquake broke, providing medical and technological aid in the midst of the crisis. It was one of a number of situations in which the country has sent forces to help with humanitarian aid, including disasters in Kosovo, China  Hurricane Katrina and most recently,  in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The evening was hosted by actress Shirly Brener and Ilana Shoshan, who was crowned Miss Israel in 1980 and last year was elected Miss Israel of all time for her work supporting women’s empowerment.

FIDF support soldiers and their families through a variety of programs that distribute financial aid and other comfort and well-being for soldiers and their families, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Every guest was given a limited edition Gypsy T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “Make a Difference.” Sales of the shirts will benefit the IDF and its worldwide humanitarian efforts, a number which are listed on the back of the shirt.

LA Fashion Week’s Grand Finale

A Dina Bar-el creation showcased at Sunset Gower

Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood was the location for the traveling show finale of Los Angeles Fashion Week.  Officially dubbed LA Fashion Weekend, a slew of locally-based designers took over a soundstage on Friday and Saturday night to showcase their lines for fall.

A party atmosphere reigned on the red carpet and in the lobby as Stella Artois, Moreno California champagne and vodka were served up to the fashionable crowd waiting to get into the “tent” created inside the soundstage.

On Friday night, it was a denim lovers dream on the runway as Laguna Beach Jean Co. and Denim of Virtue showcased their designs. Also making their way down the catwalk: Doctrine, XCVI and Adiktion (yeah, pronounced addiction.)

Saturday night’s fashion show featured  sizzling hot lingerie from Biatta, sleek and sexy cocktail dresses and gowns by Dina Bar-el, Nicole Lee handbags and trendy men’s wear from Z Brand and Civil Society.

“I feel the fashion brands in LA have so much to offer and it is paramount to be part of helping to bring attention to these brands and to support and worked as a stain businesses in LA,” said Mikey Koffman, producer of LA Fashion Weekend.

The location was swell. They just need to nix the $10 parking fee–as there’s never a charge to park on any other lot in LA.
