GRAMMY A GO-GO

Fergie shows off the rear view in olive silk Versace for her performance at the 50th annual Grammys
Several defining moments from the 50th annual Grammy Awards at Staples Center: Kanye West’s boast that “we own this thing” has some music industry insiders predicting that might be his last Grammy. Seems people in the room—Grammy voters—are real tired of the ultra-arrogant, I should have it all attitude, even in the face of grief for his beloved mother. Vince Gill picked up on the vibe when he got his Grammy from Ringo Starr and said, “"I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?" Amy Winehouse’s performance via satellite from London favorably impressed and momentarily erased images of her…doing other things.

Smashbox Studios hosted the Grammy Style Studio featuring designers Vivienne Westwood, Thomas Pink, Hugo Boss, Toni Maticevski, H. Stern, Cutler hair products, Make Up Forever cosmetics, St. Tropez tanning products, Hugh Puppies and K-Swiss
Warner Music Group took over St. Vibianas downtown and Krislyn Designs transformed the outside into a “forest” using deadwood from California trees as décor and for chairs and centerpieces. The new STK on La Cienega made its LA debut as the venue for Entertainment Weekly’s afterparty for Def Jam’s L.A. Reid, Uni celebrated at the Palms and Sony/BMG partied at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Earlier, in the days leading up to the show, it was busy backstage as Distinctive Assets hosted its talent lounge for the 9th year running (presented by Kinerase and featuring Xbox’s Rock Band). Within just a few moments, Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban came through, as did presenters and performers including Ringo, John Legend, Kelis, Amy Lee, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Ludacris, Feist, Jason Bateman, Blair Underwood, The Plain White T’s, Natalie Cole and Brad Paisley. They got goodies like Gibson guitars, Croton watches, Snow Queen vodka, Rituals cosmetics, the Sak handbags, Havaianas sandals, commemorative jackets from Dickies, jeans and hoodies from the new Anarchy Denim, iPod accessories from iHome, metal road cases from Procase—and enough Kinerase to smooth out wrinkles and repair some of the skin damage from too much partying.

FIRST LOOK AT BCAM

The Jeff Koonsian view as you enter the 3rd floor gallery of BCAM at LACMA
A mélange of restored vintage streetlights marks the Wilshire Blvd. entrance of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA, www.lacma.org
So this is what happens when you get $50 million from a huge supporter of the arts, a Pritzker-prize winning architect, a hustling young museum director and orders to put the construction crew on hyper-overdrive. Eli Broad, Renzo Piano and Michael Govan flung open the doors of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA late last week to the media, and have been showcasing it ever since at a series of private events. The stunning three-story building is just east of LACMA West, on the site of a decrepit parking structure and what was once Ogden Drive, where now sits a 47-foot toy fire truck by Charles Ray. Up the red escalator to the galleries, visitors find major works from the world’s most acclaimed contemporary artists including Jeff Koons, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger and Ed Ruscha. Opens to the public February 16: a must-see.

GOODBYE STRIKE, HELLO OSCAR PARTY SHUFFLE

Marion Cotillard with Harry Dean Stanton (and Julian Schnabel) at the Chopard/Picturehouse soiree for La Vie en Rose at the Chateau Marmont last week
Hooray, the WGA strike is over! Not as if the damage can be undone overnight, and Oscar season has already suffered major casualties. After splashily announcing that its Oscar party would be moved to Craft in Century City from the now-closed Mortons, Vanity Fair pulled the plug on its….hate to use this cliché but it’s actually true…star-studded bash, even as it was apparent the strike was going to settle. Notoriously tight-lipped, the VF folks aren’t revealing the real reason for the cancellation, but it’s left people scrambling to get into the other Oscar night parties: Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, Aids Project LA and Night of 100 Stars, all of which are actually viewing parties that start at 5 pm. Other cancellations include Ed Limato’s Friday night party and Barry Diller’s Saturday luncheon. Will anyone step in to take over the major after party event of the night? Probably too late and too costly at this late date…

BOND STREET, LA STYLE

So excited about the recently opened LA location of New York’s BondST in the new Thompson Hotel, but the kitchen still needs to work out some kinks before it reaches the level of its raved-about East Coast parent. With so much competition on the Asian fusion front—although not in the immediate neighborhood--it needs to happen in a New York minute.

The place is gorgeous, with deep brown leather booths, suede chairs and limestone walls, and you can’t go wrong with traditional items like spicy tuna rolls.

LAST DAYS OF AUGUST

It’s the calm before the storm when after Labor Day, in quick succession, boom boom boom: its Fashion Week in New York, the VMAs in Las Vegas and Emmy Week in LA.
One man is aiming to break new ground at Bryant Park, and he’s not in the schmatta business. Executive chef Andy Pastore wants to feed the fashion masses with his take on Asian-fusion cuisine.  What, you say? Food at Fashion Week? That would be a first. You could drink yourself silly, partake of any one of a number of controlled and uncontrolled substances but not run across a morsel for days and nights on end, save for a couple of chocolate-covered strawberries backstage at the shows.  (At least in LA, you can buy snackies at Smashbox to soak up some of the alcohol.)
Maybe the California sunshine got to the native Brooklynite, who at press time, was searching for an NYC venue in which to temporarily hang his toque and serve up his delicacies like an heirloom tomato and mozzarella Napoleon, Thai bouillabaisse with Maine lobster tail or grilled Szechuan pepper-crusted filet mignon. Normally you can find him turning these dishes out from the kitchen at Ritual, on the site of the old White Lotus in Hollywood, with its sultry, candle-lit patio and adjacent nightclub. Pastore began his career in New York under some of the greatest names in the business, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten,  before moving West for stints at Wolfgang Puck’s fondly-remembered Granita, Michael’s, the Sunset Room, Sterling Steakhouse and Cabana Club.

FASHIONISTAS WHO ACTUALLY EAT FOOD, IN SMALL BITES

Teri Hatcher and daughter Emerson party at One Sunset with Mark Badgley + James Mischka
Countless St-Germain liqueur artisanale cocktails were downed and  truffle pizza, mini-crab cakes, tuna tartar and beef tenderloin were snatched up by a tres- fashionable crowd Monday night at One Sunset to honor Teri Hatcher as the new face of Badgley Mischka’s fall campaign.  DH castmates Felicity Huffman, James Denton, Andrea Bowen and Dana Delaney turned out to show their support along with Sama Eyewear’s Sheila Vance and jewelry designer Michelle Roy.

BARON DAVIS + LA STARS = MAGIC
Angie Stone rocks the crowd at the LA Stars “Rodeo Drive Experience” earlier this month, raising money for the charity overseen by NBA All-Stars Baron Davis and Paul Pierce to benefit at-risk youth in Southern California, and furthering work done by Magic Johnson and his eponymous foundation. Always a pleasure to see his smiling face.

MARTINI MADNESS ON RODEO
With the price of a few rounds of “designer” martinis requiring a C-note these days, it’s hard to imagine five for less than $20. But that’s exactly the deal at the Luxe Hotel’s Bar 360 Monday-Friday, 5:30-7:30 pm: $3.60 drink specials include a fresh watermelon martini, or, shades of Sex and the City, a cool Cosmopolitan, both giving deeper meaning to “happy hour.” Small plates like fried green tomatoes and fresh burrata, lobster rolls and lamb lollipops add a little more joy to an after-work respite.

FROM 818 TO 310: ARCONA ARRIVES IN SANTA MONICA
Long known to Vals as THE place for a results-driven facial, Arcona is now primping and priming Westside punims. Chanel or one of the salon’s estheticians will advise you on a five-product regimen best for your skin type. Trust them.

YOU WON’T BELIEVE YOUR EYES
It sounds illogical that slapping on a clear eyeliner at night can make lashes grow longer and thicker, but TAR has it on good authority that these potions actually work, with a little patience and a lot of persistence. The best: RevitaLash, which is making some long-lashed believers out of those who use it regularly for 3-4 weeks, when results kick in. Try it yourself, and save the time spent on often over-hyped lash extensions. And there’s a great backstory: ophthalmologist Michael Brinkenhoff originally developed the product for his wife Gayle, who was losing her eyelashes during chemotherapy for breast cancer. A portion of the proceeds of each tube sold ($150) goes to breast cancer research.

RIP OF THE WEEK
Don’t fall into this trap: valet parking at the Grove will cost you $20 unless you spend $250 at the plasticine mall. Puh-leeze. One savvy moviegoer gamed the system by purchasing a $300 necklace at Nordstrom and then returned it the next day…at Westside Pavilion.

THERE IS SOME CONSIDERATION FOR GUESTS HERE
Patrons of the Writers Bar and Jaan restaurant at Raffles L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills get free valet parking and customers of the spa at the InterContinental in Century City also park gratis via valet, which TAR awards the best chill-while waiting-for-your-car spot at a hotel in LA, complete with couches, coffee tables, heat lamps and ashtrays. But don’t get too comfortable: they always seem to deliver the cars pronto. Jiminy!
