From the moment one entered the room, it was apparent that the 6th annual Christmas Gala and Fundraiser for the Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation was going to be a unique and special evening at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills.

After all, Hollywood royalty, Sidney Poitier, was going to reign over the proceedings.

As the festivities got underway, actors dressed as cast members from the classic television show “Gilligan’s Island” greeted guests as waiters handed them piña coladas in coconut shells. The cocktail hour was complete with a harpist, two separate photo booths and house photographer as well as a silent auction with an array of merchandise including a Swarovski crystal-studded evening bag, Star Wars toys– including the coveted BB-8 droid–and beauty, skincare, lifestyle and hospitality items.

All of the proceeds went to BBSCF, founded in 2011 by actor/musician Bobby Sherman and philanthropist Brigitte Poublon to provide underserved students in Ghana with a quality education support system so that they can begin a lifelong cycle of success.  Programs include school tuition and boarding, tutoring and enrichment activities, holiday and summer camps, instrumental music, dance and art.

As guests finished mingling, they entered the ballroom which was decorated with stunning arrangements of all-white and cream florals adorning the dinner tables, adding to the festive and elegant atmosphere. In keeping with the theme, there was also a “Gilligan’s Island” boat, the S.S. Minnow–and palm trees illuminated with multicolored lights.

Actor Terence J hosted the evening, which included special performances by the Rockettes, The Cowling Band, a number from the Lion King with costumed dancers and a huge crowd-pleaser, Sherman performing Christmas songs including Jingle Bells.

But the biggest applause came when Poitier was presented with the International Leadership Award for his ongoing commitment, with wife Joanna, to the foundation and its work. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he began his acceptance speech, filled with his trademark charm.

“My wife didn’t tell me about this part,” he joked, as the audience remained on their feet.

And soon those feet moved to the dance floor, where the festivities continued late into the night after the appearance of another VIP. Yes, Santa Claus touched down, and gave each honored guest special holiday gift.
