The Royal Couple Arrives at the BAFTAs

The BAFTA Awards are the British version of the Oscars, but this year the participants followed in the footsteps of those at the Golden Globes by wearing all black in solidarity with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

There were two notable exceptions: Princess Kate, who in keeping with royal protocol not taking a political stand wore a dark green gown with black piping, and actress Frances McDormand, outfitted in a black, red and pink long sleeve dress, who received the BAFTA for her memorable role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

That film was the big winner at the ceremonies held Feb. 18 in London’s Royal Albert Hall, winning five awards including Best Film and scoring another trophy for supporting actor Sam Rockwell.

“Our film is a hopeful one in lots of ways but it’s also an angry one, and as we’ve seen this year, sometimes anger is the only way to get people to listen and to change, so we’re thrilled that BAFTA has recognized this,” said director Martin McDonagh– who won the Best Screenplay away for Three Billboards. (McDonagh was also nominated as director but lost to Guillermo del Toro for his work helming The Shape of Water.)

“As Martin [McDonagh] said, I have a little trouble with compliance,” said McDormand in accepting her statuette. “But I want you to know I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black. I also want to say that I appreciate a well-organized act of civil disobedience.”

The sexual harassment scandal that has rocked Hollywood was also referenced by actress Salma Hayek, who was one of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers.

“It gives me great pleasure to be the one to present the nominations for the Leading Actor award. This is an extraordinary collection of actors at the top of their game, and emerging talent, who are already producing world-class work,” Hayek said.

“And the winner is: Frances McDormand.”

It was actually Gary Oldman, for his role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, but her comments drew a huge round of applause from the audience.

The ceremonies were hosted by actress Joanna Lumley. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, has been the president of BAFTA for the past eight years.

Here is the full list of nominees with the winners indicated in bold.
