Oh, to take some of these babies for a joy ride….

It was the perfect setting to display classic and historic automobiles: the classic and historic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills—as the first annual Concours d’Elegance debuted on the grounds of the 1928 estate built by the Doheny oil family.

As with many first-time events, there were some glitches, like long waits to take a shuttle to the mansion from a Beverly Hills parking lot and even longer lines to get food served up by Lawrys. A promised Wolfgang Puck food booth never seemed to materialize. No fault of the organizers, who are sure to solve these issues next time around, but the April weather didn’t cooperate either, as gray skies kept things on the downright chilly side. Still, the cars shone—about 100 American and European automotive gems, ranging from a 1934 Packard Coupe Roadster to a 1959 Ferrari and a 1931 Rolls Royce Phantom. For biker enthusiasts, the Concours also featured a selection of classic motorcycles.
