BET Awards at 10: Royalty Reigns
Most of the buzz about the 10th annual BET Awards has been about Chris Brown breaking down during his MJ tribute performance of “Man in the Mirror,” although it should have been about Prince, who picked upthe network’s Lifetime Achievement Award—but disappointed the crowd by not picking up any instruments. However, he did catch Patti LaBelle’s shoe as she kicked it off during an energetic tribute performance to him.
Hosted by Queen Latifah in a variety of characters and costumes, the show featured performances by Kanye West (his first awards show appearance since the infamous Taylor Swift fiasco at the VMAs last year), Alicia Keys (who jumped on top of the piano) Eminem and Diddy Dirty Money (Sean John’s latest musical escapade), which was very well received. Up and comers Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz also wowed the crowd.
Beyonce and Jay-Z were no-shows to accept their statuettes, as was Rihanna—leaving Brown in the spotlight to tell the crowd that he’d let them down (by beating the living daylights out of his former girlfriend) and won’t do it again. Judging by the warm reception he received, he’s well on the road to redemption for his felony assault.
