Take a beautiful weekend along the Southern California coast with ideal surf conditions, the amenities of a luxury hotel, some star power– and the elements were exceptionally right for Oakley’s annual Learn to Ride Fueled by Muscle Milk event at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point.
But it was a lot more than a beautiful day at the beach. Guests of the two-day event stayed at the luxurious St. Regis Monarch Bay hotel, a gorgeous property perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific in southern Orange County.
After battling traffic bound for Comic Con in San Diego, they were treated to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres outside on the hotel grounds as reps from Oakley showed off their new sunglasses styles and the DJ livened things up for everyone else at the property.
The St. Regis, like the area’s other high-end resorts, is a place you don’t want to leave if you don’t have to, so you’re in for the night– and for great time.
Conditions were perfect at the beach for surf instruction, and many took the plunge into the chilly but refreshing waves. If the sun was too intense, you could take shelter under the Oakley tent stocked with food, drink, sunscreen, hats and surf gear.
As the sun went down, guests gathered on the gorgeous grounds of the hotel for cocktails before a private dinner in the wine room, which featured a salad of baby field greens, sea bass and beef tenderloin and an amazing molten chocolate cake with roasted almond ice cream.
But the main attraction was the live music, starting with the special set from the band Juke Kartel–culminating in their rendition of the Doors’ “LA Woman” with lead singer Toby Rand giving shout-outs to ladies in cities across the world. The band members grow up inMelbourne, Australia, and relocated toLos Angeles several years ago. They’ve opened for Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Nickelback and Fuel and were on the way to their next gig in Hawaii, before hitting the Viper Room in August.
Then Kate Voegele took the stage. Best known for her role on “One Tree Hill,” she wowed the crowd with a heartfelt performance of songs from her new album, “Gravity Happens,” as well cuts from previous outings “A Fine Mess” and “Don’t Look Away,” accompanying herself on guitar with a sound reminiscent of Jewel.
Voegele also designed new sunglasses for Oakley, called Beckon Women’s Special Editions Signature Series, which will soon be on the market. Purchasers will also receive her new album.
The weekend getaway came to a close where else but at the water’s edge. Shades on or off, it was a memorable view.
