The Shape of WaterThe Shape of Water took the top film prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards held Saturday night, securing its place as one of the frontrunners for Oscar’s best picture.

Director Guillermo del Toro was not on hand at the Beverly Hilton to receive the honor. The romantic fantasy film’s supporting actor Richard Jenkins told the audience at the Beverly Hilton that del Toro was in Mexico with his father, who is ill, and read a letter from him.

Other film honors went to Coco for animated feature and Jane took the documentary prize.

The television trophies cemented the status of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, both of which have been awards magnets this season. Each program also took home prizes at the recent Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards in their respective comedy and drama categories.

Other TV honors went to the British science fiction anthology series Black Mirror for longform television, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for live entertainment and talk and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath won for nonfiction program.

The ceremonies also featured noteworthy honorary awards with Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele receiving the Stanley Kramer Award from TV icon Norman Lear. “It feels like we are living in the sunken place right now,” he said, referring to the film’s signature moment that he sees as a symbol for marginalized people who don’t have a voice in our society. “We won’t be silenced. We won’t be suppressed. Art is our weapon. We can break out of the sunken place together.”

Speaking of Lear, Ryan Murphy was honored with the Norman Lear Award and in this era of #MeToo and Time’s Up, he devoted his speech to women, noting that his company now employs them in 60% of its directing slots. Several years ago, Murphy started the Half Initiative aimed at giving women half of those positions.

Director Ava Duvernay was awarded the Visionary Award. “Don’t think of diversity is a good thing to do. Think of it as a must. An absolute must,” she said.
