The World War II epic Dunkirk followed behind with eight nods and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with seven. All three films earned best picture nominations.
Meanwhile, all those efforts to make the motion picture academy less white and male begun several years ago in the wake of #OscarsSoWhite are beginning to paying off. This year’s crop of nominees, announced Tuesday, reveals a dramatically more diverse slate of contenders than in previous years.
Two of the five best actor nominees are black as are two of the best supporting actress nominees, while the best director category includes a Latin man (del Toro), a black man (Jordan Peele) and a woman, Greta Gerwig– only the fifth woman in history ever nominated for best director.
Other notable noms include Rachel Morrison, unbelievably, the first woman ever nominated for best cinematography for Mudbound, while that film’s director and co-writer, Dee Rees, became the first black woman to be nominated for best adapted screenplay, along with writer Virgil Williams.
Peele also made history with his racial horror story Get Out by scoring best picture, best director and best original screenplay nods, while star Daniel Kaluuya was tapped in the best actor category.
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep scored her record 21st Oscar nomination for her role as Washington Post owner Katherine Graham in The Post, which also made the best picture list although director Steven Spielberg and costar Tom Hanks did not join her as nominees.
The 90th Academy Awards, hosted again this year by Jimmy Kimmel, air live on ABC March 4.
