PPLA Food Fare Takes Off at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar
Eating, drinking and shopping – all for a good cause.
The cold weather didn’t prevent more than 2,000 people from turning out for one of the hottest annual events in Los Angeles – Planned Parenthood LA’s 39th Annual Food Fare, held during two lively daytime and evening sessions March 1 at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar.
Guests got their fill of gourmet food and drink from more than 150 of Southern California’s best restaurants, caterers and libation purveyors. There was also clothing, jewelry, accessories and housewares available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the organization.
The event honored 2018 Chef of the Year Chris Phelps, the owner of Salt’s Cure and Breakfast by Salt’s Cure. Phelps is a dedicated supporter of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles and has hosted numerous private restaurant events supporting the organization.
What began in 1979 with the cooking demonstration featuring iconic chef Julia Child has grown into one of the largest and most popular food festivals in Southern California.
In addition to the large number of vendors, the event features a wine auction and a silent auction and raffle.
It is physically impossible to sample all of the food and beverages, but some of our top, delectable food choices were provided by A. O. C., Blvd Kitchen, Cookie Good, Del Frisco’s Grill Santa Monica, Hamasaku, Otium, Pink’s Hot Dogs, Poke 2 Go, Rao’s Hollywood, Rosti Tuscan Kitchen, Sweet and Savory, Upper West Restaurant, Via Alloro, Vuvacious Catering and the Wallace.
Just the opportunity to have a choice of Pink’s famous hot dogs—vegan, turkey or beef– without waiting in line on La Brea was a thrill. Maybe next time they can serve mini versions, because it’s very hard to not eat the whole thing and save room for dozens of other foodie favorites being served up.
It’s even more difficult to drink up the vast array of beverages and spirits offered by purveyors including Angel City Brewery, DomaineLA, Johnnie Walker, Nomadica Wine, Pasquini Coffee, Smog City Brewing, Vina Sympatica Sparkling Wines and Wanu Water.
Last year’s event raised a record $1.2 million that went to support PPLA’s 19 health centers in Los Angeles County, supporting its mission to provide reproductive and other critical healthcare services to people in the community while offering the care and information to help people lead healthy lives.
