The Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and its star, Rami Malek were the big champions at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, who made history at the event’s first Asian American host– and also scored a statuette as lead actress in the television drama “Killing Eve.”

Last year nearly everyone wore black in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the ensuing Time’s Up and #MeToo movements. This year, race and gender equality ruled the night at the 76th edition of the awards as the 88 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowed honors for film and television.

Long known as the boozy funfest of awards shows, the Globes got serious by recognizing a sea of previously underrepresented talent and projects that dealt with racial and societal issues.

Oh summed it up by telling the audience at the Beverly Hilton’s International ballroom that she took the hosting gig because she wanted to witness this moment of change. “This moment is real. Trust me. It is real. Because I see you, and I see you, all these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else.”

Among the nominees were productions focused on groups previously overlooked by mainstream entertainment, movies and shows including “Black Panther,” “Roma,” “crazy Rich Asians” and “Pose.”

Iconic comedian Carol Burnett made history when she accepted the first Carol Burnett Lifetime Achievement Award from Steve Carell, who noted that half a century after she began, she remains the gold standard for comedy. “Can I accept this award every year?” she asked in her acceptance speech, which touched on her breakthroughs in television comedy and the people who helped her along the way.

“Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming about being young again and doing it all over,” she said. “And then I bring myself up short when I realize how incredibly fortunate I was to be there at the right time. Because what we did then couldn’t be done today. Here’s to reruns and YouTube.”

Another woman with a long history in the industry – Glenn Close – scored a surprise win as best actress in a drama motion picture for “The Wife” over presumptive favorite Lady Gaga in “A Star is Born.”

In yet another win for the over 40, 50, 60 and 70-year old crowd was Michael Douglas for his role in “The Kominsky Method.” In his acceptance speech he shouted out both costar Alan Arkin and his 102-year-old father, the legendary Kirk Douglas.

Netflix’s “Kominsky” also took the statuette for best TV series, musical or comedy. The streamer also scored with a win for Richard Madden as best actor in a television series drama for “Bodyguard.”

FX was a double winner for its limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and its lead actor, Darren Criss.
