Lady Gaga and Glenn Close tie for top acting honors at the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards

It was a night of unexpected multiplicity at the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, with ties in two marquee acting categories in film and television. Lady Gaga tied with Glenn Close for Best Actress for their roles in “A Star Is Born” and “The Wife,” while Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette also tied and both took home statuettes for Best Actress in a limited television series.

Christian Bale scored two trophies for his transformative lead role as vice president Dick Cheney in “Vice,” and gave a comedic acceptance speech thanking the HFPA– whoops, wrong critics’ organization. It was a pointed reference to his win a week before at the Golden Globe Awards during which he compared the role to being Satan. But in all seriousness, Bale, a native of Australia who was handed the award by fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman. went on to say how thankful he was of America and being an American.

It was one of the many highlights of the evening at the ceremonies hosted by Taye Diggs and broadcast from Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar on The CW Network Sunday night. The awards are chosen by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) lauding the top achievements in film and television.

“Roma” was the clear favorite in the film categories, taking home four awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography for Alfonso Cuarón, and Best Foreign Language Film.  “Black Panther” and “Vice” followed close behind, each winning in three categories.

Cementing their status as awards season front runners, Best Supporting Actor went to Mahershala Ali for “Green Book” and Regina King took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

Box office hit “Crazy Rich Asians” took the trophy for best comedy. with the entire cast coming up on stage to accept the prize.

FX’s “The Americans” may have ended its run but it was certainly not forgotten as the critics bestowed three trophies on it for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Matthew Rhys, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Emmerich.

Also scoring three prizes, Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The 1950s-set series won Best Comedy Series for the second consecutive year.  Series star Rachel Brosnahan also scored a repeat win as Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to the show’s Alex Borstein, who plays Brosnahan’s manager.

One week after her hosting gig and her win at the Golden Globes, it was another big night for Sandra Oh as she received Best Actress in a Drama Series honors for “Killing Eve.”

In another of the evening’s highlights, Academy Award winner Viola Davis presented Claire Foy with the Critics’ Choice #SeeHer Award.

The cast of “The Big Bang Theory,” including Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Jim Parsons, and Melissa Rauch presented  Chuck Lorre  with the Critics’ Choice Creative Achievement Award.   In addition to that show, which is entering its final season, Lorre was lauded for his work created acclaimed comedies  Mom,” “Young Sheldon,” and “The Kominsky Method.”
