Silly, Scary ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Flashes Back to 1997 Original

If you’re a fan of the original 1997 slasher film, you’re probably going to enjoy this re-boot – especially with the participation of two of the original film’s stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt and  Freddie Prinze Jr.

They survived the on-screen bloodbath after a group of five teenage friends tried to cover up a fatal car accident.

As a first-time viewer of the franchise, I didn’t even buy that premise. Did one of them standing in the roadway really cause the car to go over a cliff? Sure, that’s possible but it’s not like they hit a vehicle and left the scene of a fatal hit-and-run.

The boogieman that arises is apparently connected to the dead man and stalks the teenagers all over their picture-perfect North Carolina town, after they make a pact to never tell anyone about the accident

Well, someone is bound to squeal, and the threats start coming in a year after the accident, starting with a bridal shower congratulatory card that states, “I know what you did last summer.”

Soon, the fiancé is found brutally murdered on the grounds of his home while his bride to be (Madelyn Cline as Danica) is taking a relaxing bath with headphones on and doesn’t hear his screams for help.

Oddly, she doesn’t seem to care much, as she and the other friends also become targets of the mysterious killer, who seems to appear around every corner.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, IKWYDLS is actually the fourth film in the franchise, and the fisherman killer was himself killed off in film #2. But no matter.

It’s a summer horror popcorn flick, designed to ignore the absurdity of much of the storyline and the often-laughable dialogue.

Still, you might get hooked—into staying through the credits, when there is a teaser that portends more to come. And Sarah Michelle Gellar might just have another cameo.
