And the Emmys Go To ‘The Studio,’ ‘The Pitt,’ ‘Severance’ and ‘Adolescense’

New host and new blood at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, held Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and televised on CBS and Paramount+.

Standup comic Nate Bargatze shepherded the ceremonies in which the night’s biggest story was the scale of The Studio’s triumph, breaking the record for the most wins for a comedy series. The Apple TV+ freshman outing not only claimed Outstanding Comedy Series but went home with a staggering 13 trophies overall, including Seth Rogen’s win for Lead Actor.

Yet, Hacks was far from forgotten: Jean Smart took home her fourth Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy, and Hannah Einbinder earned Supporting Actress. We should also mention at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend, Julianne Nicholson won Guest Actor for her memorably hilarious role as Dance Mom.

Best Drama, meanwhile, went to another freshman show, The Pitt. The HBO series about a day in the life of a Pittsburgh hospital claimed the top prize of Outstanding Drama Series, while Noah Wyle delivered a career-defining win in Lead Actor, after multiple nominations back in the day for his role on ER.

The show also picked up a supporting trophy for Katherine LaNasa. But Apple TV+’s Severance held its ground: Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman both triumphed in lead and supporting drama acting, proving the dystopian thriller remains a force with Emmy voters. It was a historic win for Tillman, who became the first Black man to win in his category.

The limited series category was dominated by Adolescence, which won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series along with acting honors for Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, plus awards for writing and directing.

The 15-year old Cooper became the youngest actor to win for supporting actor in a limited or anthology series.

HBO’s The Penguin made a mark in that category as well, with Cristin Milioti winning Lead Actress.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won the Emmy for the first time for Talk Series, and Colbert was greeted with huge applause for that victory and when he presented the comedy actor statuette to Rogen. CBS’ cancellation of his program, citing financial reasons and effective next May, sent shockwaves through the industry.

Colbert gave his headshot (from his youth) to Harrison Ford to give to Steven Spielberg, and said he had 200 talented people with him who would be looking for work.
