American Spirit AwardsThe nation was still reeling from the horrifying mass shooting in Orlando, yet the timing couldn’t have been better for the Caucus for Producers, Writers and Directors to present its 11th Annual American Spirit Awards on June 13 at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The speakers and recipients of the honors were inspirational yet humble in the wake of the tragedy.

“All this does is make us better,” said Caucus co-chair Tanya Hart as she opened the luncheon event.

The American Spirit Awards recognize outstanding individuals who support, protect and promote the interest of storytellers including producers, writers and directors working in entertainment, television, sports, cable and new media.

Six awards were presented during the ceremonies.

NYU’s Sheril Antonio received the award for special achievement in educating new filmmakers. She has just received a promotion to overseeing strategic initiatives for the entire Tisch School for the Arts at the University.

Dennis Doty– longtime production partner of the late Gil Cates – was awarded the Caucus’s Legend Award. He had some advice to pass on: “Try to surround yourself with the best people you can. Find the fun in it and make every day better.”

Retired US Marine Corps gunnery Sgt. Nick Popaditch received the distinguished war veteran commendation and gave an inspirational speech about watching the people of Iraq celebrate in 2003 when Saddam fell. “I realized I was seeing freedom and liberty,” he said. “I was humbled, as I have that every day – as all of us do as Americans.”

The talented husband and wife team of actor and director Rocky Carroll and architect Gabrielle Bullock were also recognized for their efforts, although Carroll noted that his most challenging role during his 26 years in the entertainment industry was as being a parent, as his 15-year-old daughter beamed from the audience.

For his support of the entertainment industry, LA City Councilman Paul Krekorian was also honored with a Spirit Award.
